What do you do when you have over 500 Triathlon athletes waiting to race, a nasty Lake (Ontario) that has been kicking up a fuss all weekend and everyone waiting on your decision as to whether or not a swim can be done?
You do exactly what John Salt (Series Director for the HSBC/MultiSport Canada Triathlon Series) did. Cancel the swim. I have known John since 2003 and his passion for the sport and for the athletes is only surpassed by his excellent judgement and knowledge.
I know how John agonized over cancelling the swim on both days but both decisions were in the absolute BEST interest of everyone concerned. It is vastly more acceptable to switch up a race than it is to have a serious accident or death because of an unsafe swim venue.
Congratulations should go out to all the MultiSport staff including Jason & Kevin who were instrumental in helping John make the decision and then in mobilizing the staff and volunteers to re-marshal the course.
Aside from the “Dri-athlon” switch, the races themselves were flawless, well received and VERY FAST! There were a tonne of speed demons on the course today and times were blazing!
Make sure to check back again tomorrow for the Cobourg Shot of the Race Gallery and voting!
In happiness and health as always!
Mike C.
