If I was your Coach
By Roger Hospedales
“If I was your coach I would tell you not to race tomorrow!”
These are the words that Jody Miller (HSBC Triathlon Series announcer and Ironman athlete) said to me just before I left the Gravenhurst race site on Saturday after having raced the International Duathlon.
The nutcase in me still planned on showing up on Sunday and doing the GT 12.9, and sprint duathlon races but I woke up at 5 am on Sunday and let common sense rule. I had some inner thigh soreness from the Saturday’s race and could have easily raced through it, but with me doing Ironman Lake Placid next weekend, I chose to stay home on Sunday. Would I have raced if I didn’t have an Ironman to do? For sure, I can’t miss out on all that fun. But I must thank Coach Jody for keeping me in check. Whether I have a great race or not next weekend, taking Sunday off was the correct thing to do. Plus, I got the chance to watch to Tour de France live on TV.

Jody is a pretty smart cookie. If we could only get her to talk the same kind of sense into Paul Gonsalves maybe he’d stay injury free more often.
