In memory of Matt
Sorry for the delay this week. I was a bit stumped on what to write about.
I was all set to describe a great experience at city of Madison, Wisconsin – watching a buddy of mine, Touraj Asadi finish his first Ironman. And give kudos to another friend of mine (Alison Gonsalves) who finished the very tough Muskoka 70.3 along with a crew of great people in the Markham area.
However, that was all put on the backburner once I got back home to find out that we experienced a loss in the triathlon family.
Matt Tatham, competed Saturday in Wasaga Beach, won his age group but experienced difficulty once he finished and later died in hospital. A very tragic incident that has everybody shocked. I won’t go into more details here (more can be found on the HSBC Triathlon Series website and newsletter – there is a touching tribute written by a friend of Matt’s) other than to say that my condolences go out to Matt’s family and friends.
Out of respect to Matt’s memory, I will end here.
I did not know Matt, but losing anyone in this great triathlon family is tough to take. In my small way (and maybe you can jump on board with this too), when I get body marked this weekend I will ask them to write “606” just above my age on my calf or wherever the rules allow. This was the number he last raced with and I would love to take his spirit along on a final journey this weekend in Lakeside.
Have a great rest of the week.
Hug your loved ones.
Roger
